What is a DIP? Ranch Sauce.
A Dip or Dipping Sauce is a sauce in which to immerse a generally more solid food. It’s what differentiates it from sauces for dressing, which are applied directly to foods. Perhaps the best-known Dip is that of nachos with guacamole; surely all of us have ‘dipped’ in a Mexican restaurant and also at home.
Simply prepare a dressing combining the ingredients you like the most and dip with vegetables, tostadas, crackers, French fries… The variety of dips that can be made is as broad as the ingredients you want to use, from the mildest to the spiciest. What is clear is that this word is not from the Spanish vocabulary, although a ‘snack’ brand wanted (and wants) to instill it in us.
Who knows, perhaps the RAE will end up adopting it, but for now we will continue to ‘mojar’ (dip) or ‘sucar’ (dip), although that is not in the dictionary either… Do you ‘dip’ or ‘mojar’ (dip)?
