Where does teriyaki sauce come from?

Teriyaki sauce is believed to have originated in 17th-century Japan. In fact, the word teriyaki refers to a Japanese cooking method in which meat or fish is grilled or roasted and basted in a soy-based sauce. The word teriyaki derives from the word teri, which refers to the gloss that the sauce imparts, and yaki to the cooking method (roasted or grilled).
